Welcome
Greetings to all my faithful readers. My name is Andrew Chong and I will be a senior this fall at San Rafael High School. This is my first year doing an internship so I'm still a bit green; nonetheless, I hope that this blog can be of some assistance and some use. I was born on December 17, 1991. I always thought I was born in winter but it turns out that winter starts on the 20th so I'm actually an autumn kid. One of my single greatest joys in life is music, all kinds of music: rock, hip-hop, punk, alternative, indie, somba, jazz, latin, classical, and even country music. I will be returning to my position of bass player in San Rafael High Schools Jazz band for the 4th year in a row. I live in San Rafael and enjoy spending my time with my friends.

Internship Description
As an intern with People's Lobby my primary duties are to try and push any legislation that we are currently working on. Right now that would be the American World Service Corp Congressional Proposal. Trying to push this legislation could entail many different tasks from sending out emails to making powerpoints. I appreciate my internship position in the fact that it is lax enough for me to do my own thing but structured enough to the point where I have a clear direction. It's a nice work environment too.
You can go visit the American World Service Corp website here: http://www.worldservicecorps.us/. You can also find the complete proposed bill on the website.

Organization Overview and Culture
Honestly, I'm a pretty unorganized person so I may not be most qualified to give advice on organization. It doesn't really matter though. As far as I'm concerned organization is synonymous with priority; be sure to set your priorities straight. Maybe you can learn from my mistakes like I do. For example: when I'm super tired, but I have an essay due the next day I'd probably take a relaxing 3 hour nap--you shouldn't. To sum all of this up succinctly: do work. Be busy and keep your priorities straight, and don't forget to do work.
On culture. Get educated because education is power. I'm not even joking. All throughout history supressors always deprive the suppressed of education, and sadly it really does keep this unfortunate group down. Strive to be educated so you can have a broader, more diverse perspective of life. Plus, it's pretty legit to be knowledgable; I would love to know everything someday. Be aware of the world and the people in it.

Career Path to Top
There is no doubt that certain traits and skills are more helpful than others when trying to "get to the top." However, that is not to say that the higher you are in your career the happier you will be, so don't fret too much. I'm not the wisest person in the world but here are some ideas to keep in mind:
1) Know what you want and strive to get it.
1) Be Positive.
1) Make the best of your opportunities.
1) Be confident.
As you may have noticed they are all ranked as the most important, and they are. Hope this helps.

How My Internship Fits/Does Not Fit My Future
As someone who would love to grow up to help others I feel like my internship, being political in nature, can help me help others. As I see it politics is a vehicle for change and helping others. Also, I believe that you can learn and benefit from anything.
Advice to New Interns
Make the best of your situation. Don't be lazy, nonchalant, and passive. Believe me, I can be the laziest, nonchalant, passive person ever, but it's detrimental to my career path. Learn all that you can. Remember to be thankful that you are in the position you are in and make the best of it. Speak your mind and be real.
